Hachette UK are offering the chance to attend their Insight Into Publishing event on 1/7/15:
Hachette UK is the UK’s most diversified trade publishing group. Our group is made up of several publishing companies and imprints including Headline Publishing Group, Hodder & Stoughton, John Murray Press, Quercus Books, Orion Publishing Group, Octopus Publishing Group, Hachette Children’s Books, Little, Brown Book Group and Hodder Education. You might not have heard of us as a brand but you will know our books. We work with authors such as Robert Galbraith, Alex Ferguson, Stephen King, Ian Rankin, Martina Cole, David Nicholls and Ella Woodward to name a few.
On the 1st July, for the third time we’re offering 50 undergraduate and postgraduate students the opportunity to find out about the amazing career opportunities available in the book publishing industry. We’re opening our doors to students studying for qualifications in digital, media, marketing, business, finance, law, social sciences, and humanities, to introduce them to the diverse and exciting roles a publishing house can offer. Over the past few years our business has changed dramatically; we’re more digitally focused, (in 2013 we published over 23,000 eBooks, making us the UK’s number 1 eBook publisher), we listen and talk to our consumers using social media, and we have streamlined our processes. We need people from different disciplines and backgrounds to help us strengthen and broaden our business for the future.
As a business we often have many applications for work experience, internships and the entry-level roles we advertise however the applicants we attract are often from similar backgrounds and degree subjects: we want to change the perception that publishing is just for the ‘bookish’ – we’re an exciting, dynamic and changing industry and we want to talk to students about what the industry and we as an employer can offer, even if they’ve not considered publishing before.
What are we offering?
From 10am till 5.30 pm students will be able to meet key people already working for us, find out more about the industry, and gain contacts for work experience placements and future roles.
For those interested, we’ll offer some 1:1 time with one of our team for advice on CV writing and interview techniques.
We’re providing lunch and refreshments, and will reimburse London travel expenses between zone 1 and 6 (equivalent to £17).
All students need to do is ask questions and consider us when applying for their first role.
Our first two events in 2014 were so successful, over half the attendees have now completed work experience with us and three have permanent roles in our business.
You can find out more by visiting https://insightintopublishing.hachette.co.uk/ and apply for a place. Places will be offered to those applications which are clearly written and easy to read, demonstrate applicable skills and enthusiasm for a career in publishing. We’ll also be looking for applications that show imagination and originality. We will be accepting applications from 14.00pm on Friday 29th July 2015.
